Storm damage roof repair

A storm does not usually wreck a sound roof. It finds the weak bit. One tile comes off, the ridge mortar has already cracked, the lead at the chimney lifts, or a slate slips because the batten under it has gone soft. The water comes in at that gap. The rest of the roof can still be fine.

Proofcare Ltd is based in Bracknell and does storm damage roof repair across Berkshire, Surrey, north Hampshire, Buckinghamshire and Slough, Oxfordshire and west London.

What the storm usually does

  • Tiles or slates off. Wind lifts the ones that were already loose. On a slate roof the slate is often still sound. The batten under it has been weakened by moisture, so the fixing has nothing solid to hold in. Nailing it back into a soft batten will not keep it there.
  • Ridge or hip tiles loose. The mortar has cracked over years. The storm finishes the job and the top course opens up.
  • Lead lifted at the chimney. The chase mortar fails or the lead has crept. The stain shows in the bedroom. The fault is outside, on the stack.
  • Valley blocked or split. Leaves and debris sit in the channel. Heavy rain has nowhere to go and it comes in under the tiles.
  • Gutter pulled off the fascia. Water runs down the wall and looks like a roof leak inside.

If tiles are on the ground or you can see a gap on the ridge, that is the place. Do not go on the roof.

What to do now

Keep people away from that side of the house. Catch water inside with a bucket. If water is near a light, leave that fitting alone. Photograph the damage before anything is moved, especially if you may claim on insurance. Sudden storm damage is usually covered. Slow wear is not, and the photos are what the claim needs.

Call 07930 618151. Say which room is wet and whether tiles are on the ground. The first visit makes it safe. The lasting repair is priced once the roof can be seen.

Repair, not a new roof by default

Most storm calls are a local repair: refix or replace the slipped tiles where the batten is sound, re-bed the ridge, or put the lead back. A strip and re-lay is the job when slates are coming off across the slope because the battens have failed, or when the felt underneath has perished. We say which after looking. You get the price before any work starts.
